Akpo joined the Owls on the penultimate day of transfer activity in England although it was widely expected that Brian Laws would unveil the double signing of Akpo and his brother Sam Sodje, a defender from Reading. The deal to bring his older brother to Hillsborough too fell through at the last minute but Akpo put pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at the club until 2011.
Akpo, a powerful centre forward, has played all of his football in the lower divisions but now has a chance to prove himself at a Championship level. He scored 16 times in 53 appearances for Vale since signing from Darlington just over a year ago from.
Sodje actually scored against Wednesday during their pre-season campaign in a 3-0 win for Vale. It was a performance that impressed Laws enough to eventually bring him to Hillsborough. |
