You won't find legend Derek Dooley high in the list of all time top goalscorers, but he has a number of records that will probably never be beaten.
Sheffield born and bred, Dooley is best known for his remarkable feat in the 1951/52 season when he scored 47 goals in just 31 league and cup appearances. It is hard to see how any man could ever score more in one season than Dooley did back then. In that season he scored five, yes five, hat-tricks including five in one match at home to Notts County!
With Dooley scoring goals for fun it was no surprise that Wednesday won the Division Two championship that season. Dooley scored just under half of their 100 goals for the season.
It was remarkable that before that record breaking season Dooley had played just two games in two seasons after signing from amateur outfit Lincoln City in the summer of 1947.
He continued his hot form in front of goal in the following 1952/53 season back in Division One. He had 16 goals in 30 appearances until tradgically Dooley broke his leg in an away match at Preston North End on 14 February. That injury forced him into early retirement, but his legendary record of a goal in every game makes him one of the all time greats. |
