How can I catch an owl in the woods to keep as a pet?

I’ve been reading a lot of harry potter books and I really really want an owl friend of my own. I’ve been pretending my cats are owls lately and I’ve mentally prepared myself for the transition. I just need a plan to catch one in the forest. I’ve read books about training them and giving them shots so they won’t give me rabies and I got this big net so…

Has anyone caught an owl before? Was it hard? What kind of tips would you recommend?

Dress up ass a tree and stand in the woods my friend. Get a mouse or hampstor and tie it to a string. Tie the string to your foot and let it move around. Make it go “eek eek” to attract the barn owel. Then when the owel comes to land on your branch (Really your arm, ha ha!) throw a net on him.

Why don’t you just try some exotic pets store? They can tell you how to take care of it too.

You don’t want to do that. You probably will hurt the animal, or it will hurt you. It might even die if you try to keep it captive. If you like owls so much maybe you should get some binoculars and go look at them. There are other kinds of birds that make good pets. People don’t keep owls as pets and I’m sure there are very good reasons for that.

EDIT: Now I see your question isn’t serious. ROFL!

No No, Keep the wild life in it’s own habitat. He already has a home and you don’t want one of those wild in your house anyway, Your parents would kill you after it destroys your house!

  • Icarus:

An owl is a wild animal. Harry Potter is a character in a book. A lot of the things he does are not real — like all the magic? Leave the bird in the forest; it will not make a good pet and it is not fair to the owl. Besides, you’ll have to catch mice every day to feed it! (It will hate you.)

  • Angela B:

    You can’t. It’s illegal.

an OWL is a wild animal…
What are you going to feed it?
Have you really seen the talons on the foot of an owl..
by the way Owl’s eat cats!

IT is NOT RECOMMENDED… why not just get a large owl statue or stuffed owl? instead.

    “…And I got this big net so…”

Haha seriously? Okay you may want to check with codes and such to make sure you can keep an owl on your property. I’m not sure what that would fall under but just make sure. Uhm, what else? Oh, why not try buying an owl from an exotic animal trainer/breeder/whatever. I mean then you wouldn’t have to worry about the whole trying to bite you while you are feeding it thing. Plus an animal raised in captivity is the better pick. It will be less stress for both you and the animal. I think that if you were to just catch one and bring it home it would die. Gotta look out for the animal’s best interest you know? Stress levels are a killer.

    …….
No offense, but how old are you, 10?

    1) An owl is a wild animal, not your bestest buddy. Harry Potter books are fiction for a reason. And an owl isnt a cat. Sheesh.

2)Where would you keep this owl? Not in a tiny cage in your room. You would need to build a mews of sorts, which must be atleast 8×8, and sturdy, not your old hamster cage.

    3) How will you feed this owl? Do you expect you can just let him out every night and he will return because he loves you? Or will he exist on air? Owls eat mice, young rabbits, ect. in the wild- are you capable to provide this? Even in a dead form? Are you willing to?

    4) Do you have a permit/lience? I can assure you that there are rules to owning a raptor. Even people who hunt with hawks, falcons, eagles, and sometimes owls, have to be an appretince for 2 years, and take a state test on raptors, and have an inspection of their facility, before they are legally able to keep raptors. (Which is what an owl is)

    5) A big net? Seriously? What do you plan on, throwing it up randomly? Or just hanging it the trees and hoping some owl wont realize its there and get caught, prolly breaking it’s neck in the process?

    6) Ok, lets say you go through all of the above. How will you fund this? By asking your mommy and daddy for some money? Speaking of which, do they know of this scheme? Anyways, this’ll cost you about 1000-2000 bucks. Atleast. And more a year. Like atleast $500 each year. Now, I somehow doubt that you are old enough to get a job, or sensible enough to hold one, so how will you pay for this?

    7) Can you care for a raptor? Do you know their diseases, their anatomy, their nutritional needs? What of their behaviour?

8)Lets say you caught one. Do you have equipment to handle it safely? (For both you and the owl) Owls have talons and beaks, both meant to pierce flesh, which they do very well. What will you do when hedgwig gives you a 2 inch puncture wound, because you had no means of protection? Don’t get mad at the owl.

    7) Oh, and by the way- an owl cannot get rabies. Rabies only effects mammals. An owl isnt a mammal, neither are lizards, or fish. So sticking a poor bird with a rabies vac is rather pointless.

Seriously, kid. If you want a bird “friend” that will sit on your shoulder and “love” you, get your parents to buy you a white parakeet, and mebbe pretend it was an owl. Or keep playing with your cats. Stay away from the raptors.

Indeed wild animals should be left in the wild, especially owls. First of all it will keep you up all night, secondly have you ever seen an owl eat? Its not like they swallow it whole, the pick at it and leave the skin, also leaving blood everywhere. An owl used to eat its food in my sisters backyard, they had to get rid of their swing set because it was covered in blood, and had to clean up pieces of rabbit off their lawn. Not pretty or very magical. Taking an animal out of the wild and into a cage is a selfish thing to do. If you really want to be involved with owls, find out if their is a place in your area that has them and you can go volunteer there.
