Match Report

Spurs too good for Wednesday

Wednesday found themselves bottom of the table after going down 2-1 at home to George Graham's Tottenham side. Spurs were always going to be a tough opponent, but Danny Wilson will be frustrated at the lack of fight from his players.

The Owls have made a poor start to the season now, with just one point from their first four matches. Spurs, meanwhile, have enjoyed a great start to their campaign and find themselves at the opposite end of the table.

Tottenham got off to a great start when on 19 minutes Argentinian left-back Mauricio Taricco, a former Ipswich Town player linked with a move to Hillsborough last season, crossed over for former England striker Les Ferdinand to power in a header from all of 15 yards. It was a great effort and left Kevin Pressman left for dead.

Spurs looked to keep a grip on the game early on, but Wednesday found themselves back in the game straight after that opening goal from Ferdinand. Belgian striker Gilles de Bilde, yet to score for the Owls, went on a mazy run that ended in Tim Sherwood bringing the former PSV man down inside the box - and referee Andy D'Urso pointed to the spot.

Benito Carbone stepped up to fire the ball home infront a Kop who haven't had much to cheer about so far this season, but enjoyed seeing their little Italian wizard notch up his second goal of the season despite all his contract troubles.

Surely Danny Wilson would have been fairly pleased going in 1-1 at the break - but the Owls were faced with a further setback just minutes before half-time when Tottenham made it 2-1. Norwegian midfielder Oyvind Leonhardsen, another player reported to have been close to joining the Owls in the summer, curled in a fantastic shot from the edge of the box past the despairing dive of Pressman.

Half-time: Owls 1-2 Tottenham

Instead of a fired up Wednesday side coming out after half-time, in search of a first win this season, it was Tottenham who looked the hungrier of the two sides. Although the Owls had managed to keep Frenchman David Ginola out of the game, there were inspiring performances coming from other areas of the field for Spurs.

They could've increased their lead on several occasions in the second half - the first when Ferdinand disposessed the normally reliable Des Walker, but shot just wide.

Further chances came for George Graham's men - England midfielder Darren Anderton firing a free-kick just off target, and Steffen Iversen missing when it seemed certain Tottenham would increase their lead.

Wednesday sub Andy Booth was guilty of missing two of what were rare chances for the home side in the second half, one of those was headed off the line by Sherwood - which seemed to sum up Wednesday's day, and indeed start to this season.
