Improved Owls sunk by Schwarz strike
report from official swfc site
After the optimism of their first win of the season in the
Worthington Cup it was back to the reality of the Premiership as
Wednesday sunk to yet another league defeat.
However this was a great
improvement on Wednesday's last
trip to the North East although that
will be of little consolation to Danny
Wilson as his team sunk to their
eighth defeat in nine Premiership
matches thanks to Stefan
Schwarz's first goal for Sunderland.
The Owls defence had held firm for
51 minutes until Schwarz swooped
to volley home Nicky Summerbee's
cross from 12 yards out.
The goal was a real sickener for the Owls who against expectations
has held firm against the in form strikeforce of Kevin Phillips and Niall
Quinn. Despite their newly formed defensive resolve Wednesday
lacked invention although the surprise return from injury of second
half substitute should now go some way to improving that.
The first half was a poor advert for the Premiership with Sunderland
struggling to breakdown a stubborn Owls team. Kevin Phillips struck
an early 20 yard shot straight at keeper, Srnicek, whilst Andy Booth
had an early effort but otherwise Sunderland keeper Sorensen was
virtually untroubled.
Half-time: Sunderland 0-0 Owls
A few cups of tea were undoubtedly thrown around the home side's
dressing room because Peter Reid's side came out with fire in their
bellies in the second period. Quinn and Phillips could not quite turn
Michael Gray's cross goalwards and the outstanding Emerson Thome
had to head Rae's long-range drive wide for a corner with Srnicek out
of his goal.
Srnicek then pulled off a double save to foil Sunderland after more
good work by Summerbee. Wilson's men could have forced a
dramatic stoppage time equaliser as Danny Sonner headed Wim
Jonk's corner against the bar and after a goalmouth melee the loose
ball was fired into goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen's midriff.
Close but not close enough....
