Beni walkout as Wednesday slump to Saints The Owls usually enjoy their trips down to the south coast to play Southampton, with a good track record against the Saints over the past seasons. This season however Dave Jones' team were in no mood to be Wednesday's whipping boys and ensured Wednesday's nightmare season continued. Three more Premier League points have gone down the drain for Danny Wilson's team but off the field problems are becoming an increasing worry. Italian Benito Carbone sensationally walked out on Wednesday before the game, after being named on the substitutes bench by Wilson, and heading straight off to Gatwick Airport and flew home to Italy. It left Wilson furious that one of his own players would do such a thing, and it certainly didn't impress Carbone's team mates. It meant the Owls took the field without their star player Carbone, inspirational defender Des Walker, midfield maestro Wim Jonk and England full-back Andy Hinchcliffe. Southampton started the more lively and Kevin Pressman was called upon after just eight minutes, when Claus Lundekvam sent Marian Pahars through, and the England 'B' man was on hand to save the Owls. Wednesday, too, came close to scoring in the first half. Gilles de Bilde took the ball 40 yards in an amazing run, before firing in a shot that was well saved by Saints' keeper Paul Jones. On 16 minutes the Owls came so close to scoring - Richard Cresswell almost took advantage of a defensive slip up by Southampton, by his rebounded effort went just wide. The game's next close shave was on 26 minutes, this time it was the home side who came close to opening the scoring, as Matthew Oakley's 25-yard free-kick flew just over the bar. Right on the half-time whistle Wednesday were furious they were not awarded a penalty as a De Bilde shot seemed to strike the arm of Saints' defender Dean Richards. Referee Paul Alcock, infamously linked with the Owls for the Di Canio referee pushing act, waved away protests. Half-time: Southampton 0-0 Owls The end to end action that was displayed in the first period continued straight into the second half, as Pressman came off his line to deny Mark Hughes from scoring, as Emerson Thome had failed to clear the ball properly. Just under ten minutes into the second half and the deadlock was broken, by Southampton to the dissapointment of the away support. Soltvedt midfield run lead to Hassan Kachloul firing in a first time shot on the edge of the box, past Pressman to make it 1-0. Danny Wilson made second half substitutions in desperation to gain something from the match. With just ten minutes left the Owls should've been level - Petter Rudi found himself just four yards out from goal but instead of shooting tried to setup Richard Cresswell, whose shot was blocked by Francis Benali. There was another big penalty appeal by the Owls, this time the ball appeared to strike Benali's arm. Southampton showed the difference between the two sides on the day, the ability to take chances, scoring with just five minutes left to seal the game. Matthew Oakley was the scorer as he saw his free-kick curl round the Wednesday wall and into the top left hand corner of the net. |
