Wednesday edge win over West Brom West Brom 1-2 Wednesday - by Al Frith West Brom 1-2 Wednesday - by Peter Middleton West Brom 1-2 Wednesday - by Mike AtkinsonThe Owls kept up their 100% win rate during their pre-season programme with a 2-1 win over West Brom, who had sacked their manager Denis Smith earlier in the day. The game was a testimonial for West Brom's Paul Raven. Belgian striker Gilles de Bilde was on target for the second successive game, when his shot flew in via a deflection in the 8th minute. His impressive displays during the past week will surely earn him a place in the starting line-up to play Liverpool in a little over a week from now. He also went close to scoring again, as did Swedish midfielder Niclas Alexandersson - as Wednesday looked likely to double their lead, but at the end of the first half had to settle for just one. Half-time: West Brom 0-1 Owls The Owls only had to wait three minutes into the second half before they were 2-0 up, when Alexandersson put away a simple chance. West Brom plugged back and got one in the 65th minute, when Baggie's star Lee Hughes made it narrowed the margin to 2-1. Infact, Wednesday have substitute keeper Kevin Pressman to thank for - when he dived the right way to deny Paul Raven a 77th minute equaliser. |
