Match Report

Newcastle annihilation as Danny's boys disgrace

report from official swfc site

Sheffield Wednesday's disastrous start to the season took another bitter turn as they were torn apart by fellow strugglers Newcastle with England captain, Alan Shearer, grabbing five of the eight goals.

Shearer grabbed the limelight with a first half hat-trick and two more goals in the second period as Danny Wilson's struggling Owls were destroyed in Bobby Robson's first home game in charge. Aaron Hughes had set the ball rolling, with Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed also rubbing further salt into the Owls wounds.

This was always going to be Newcastle's day after Bobby Robson had entered St James' Park to a hero's welcome. Wednesday by contrast went into the game missing key players in skipper, Peter Atherton, Andy Hinchcliffe and Wim Jonk but it is unlikely the trio would have made much of a difference, although it could have been different early on as the visitors started brightly.

Andy Booth latched onto a week header by Alain Goma forcing defender Aaron Hughes into an athletic full length clearance. Soon afterwards Wednesday had the ball in the net after Harper sliced a clearance straight to Giles De Bilde and his diving header allowed Booth to fire home, unfortunately Boothy was ruled to be in an off-side position.

However Wednesday could not make their pressure count and the home side grabbed the crucial first goal on eleven minutes when Kieron Dyer on the left wing delivered a cross which Hughes met to send a powerful header past Pressman.

Then Dyer and Didier Domi almost grabbed another minutes later when they linked up on the left for Dyer to shoot across the Owls goal. Then Wednesday's luck took a further turn for the worst as the hard working Booth was injured in a clash of heads with Goma and was carried off to be replaced by Beni Carbone.

The situation became even worse on the half hour mark when from a corner Nolberto Solano crossed the ball into the middle and Shearer met it with a flick of his right foot to sent a shot into the far corner.

The game was all but over three minutes later when Emerson Thome was adjudged to have handled in the box and Shearer smashed the penalty home. The England captain then completed a hat-trick three minutes before the break as Dyer curled the ball in for the striker to fire home from point-blank range.

Half-time: Newcastle 4-0 Owls

Wilson brought defender Stephen Haslam on for Petter Rudi at half-time but Newcastle's fifth goal arrived just two minutes after the restart when a Shearer headed the ball into the penalty area and the outstanding Dyer stooped to nod it past Pressman.

A punch drunk Wednesday team suffered further late blows as Gary Speed put his name on the score sheet with a 78th minute header, and then Shearer sealed his personal triumph with two more goals in the last ten minutes. First Kevin Pressman could only parry Solano's free-kick and the striker was first to react to strike a low drive home from the edge of the box.

Then Robinson earned his side a second penalty five minutes from time when he was brought down by Haslam, Shearer stepped up and made simple work of the spot-kick to leave the Owls cut adrift at the bottom of the Premiership.
