Match Report

Wednesday wiped out by United

A defeat was what most expected out of a trip to Old Trafford to face treble winners Manchester United - but the Owls got more than that, they took a hiding as the Red Devil's churned up an impressive 4-0 win, and they're first win of the season to get the title defence under way. Quite simply, Sir Alex Ferguson's men brushed aside Wednesday with minimum of effort.

Wednesday's track record away to the champions over the years certainly isn't impressive, scorelines of 1-6, 0-5, 0-3 come to memory, and this one is another one to the list. The fixture was something of an exhibition

The Owls welcomed back their skipper Peter Atherton, with Danny Sonner partnering him in midfield in the absence of Dutchman Wim Jonk. Italian forward/midfielder Benito Carbone was on the bench to start off for the second successive game.

It didn't begin well at all, when the scoring opened after just nine minutes when Paul Scholes volleyed past Pavel Srnicek. It was 2-0 ten minutes before the break when Welsh winger Ryan Giggs picked out Dwight Yorke, who headed into the net with ease.

United continued to press for goals and defender Henning Berg missed three golden chances in the first half, it wasn't to matter in the end ofcourse. In the meantime, Gerald Sibon fired in a drive at United's new keeper Mark Bosnich - but it was nothing to cause him much worry.

Half-time: Man.Utd 2-0 Owls

It took United just nine minutes again from the kick-off to find the back of Wednesday's net - this time a Teddy Sheringham drive was diverted in by Andy Cole, to make it 3-0. United then brought about their substitutions, realising the game as a contest was more than over. In turn, Danny Wilson also brought on his subs - including Benito Carbone, whom many feel should've been playing from the start.

After being on the field for just four minutes, Carbone had a golden chance to sneak one back for Wednesday. His effort was blazed over the bar and it just about summed up the night for the Owls.

Wednesday's misery was complete with just five minutes remaining when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tapped in after Sheringham's shot came crashing off the bar. It was just reward for the Norwegian, who just moments later had had an effort of his own hit the woodwork. Danny Wilson's men now have nothing to show from their two starting games of the season - but must remember that the fixture list hasn't been kind to them with Liverpool and treble winner's Manchester Utd in the opening of the season.
