Owls outfoxed by Leicester report from official swfc site The Owls crumbled to a disappointing away defeat which brings to a shuddering halt their recent revival as they were comprehensively outfoxed by a spirited Leicester side. City took control of the game from the off, with the busy Steve Guppy causing Wednesday all sorts of problems down the left flank. The Owls made some headway through the good forward runs of Jonk, but failed to penetrate through the Leicester defence. It was Jonk himself who had the first real shot of the game, the ball breaking to him 25 yards out, but his resulting drive was straight at Flowers. The goal deadlock was broken on the 24th minute, with a calamity of errors providing City with the first score. A Steve Guppy left wing cross found the head of Matt Elliott at the near post, who flicked the ball into the danger zone. Wednesday keeper Srnicek came for what looked an easy catch, but misjudged the height of the ball, allowing Northern Ireland international Taggart to head home from 6 yards. It was his third goal of the season, and it was well received by the Filbert Street crowd. Half-time: Leicester 2-0 Owls Leicester continued to press from the restart, and were unlucky not to increase the lead only three minutes later. A deep Guppy cross found an unmarked Impey in the box. With great awareness, he played a perfectly waited header to the on-coming Savage, only for the Welshman to fire the ball well over. City were soon to be back on the scoresheet, as a move straight from the training ground provided them with their second of the day. Muzzy Izzet crossed the ball into Sinclair, who flicked the ball on from the nearpost to the oncoming Taggart, to score with a bullet header. It was almost a carbon copy of the first, with poor Wednesday marking this time to blame. Sheffield Wednesday should have done better with a chance after 38 minutes, a De Billde cross found Rudi, who turned and fed the ball to Sibon. The Owls striker made no contact with the ball, and a good opportunity was wasted. Wednesday were again unlucky at the close of the half, De Bilde hitting the post after some good work initially in creating the chance for himself. The Belgian was by far the best Wednesday player on the pitch, but time and time again his good work and thought was wasted on his teamates. The second half got under way much in the same vain of the first, with Steve Guppy teasing the Wednesday defence. The Filbert Street faithful urged Gerry Taggart forward at every opportunity, the City man now of course on a hat-trick. Tony Cottee grabbed Leicester's third after 56 minutes, a pinpoint cross from Andrew Impey finding the unmarked Cottee to head home from 6 yards. The Leicester forward had another busy game, and can have done his reputation no harm as Martin O'Neill continues to look to bolster his forward line. The game was dead and buried as a contest from that moment on . Wednesday struggled to get any sort of possession, and Leicester seemed happy to pass the ball around at will. The result will be seen as a major blow for Danny Wilson, as all recent good signs of rebuilding his side have been blown away by this defeat. |
