Owls denied derby win

report from official swfc site

It was a game of missed opportunities for the Owls as Leeds, outplayed for most of the game, took their limited chances to run out winners in a frenetic Yorkshire derby.

Two late goals from Alan Smith saw Leeds retain their leadership of the Premier League table but this was a game Danny Wilson's men could have won.

A fired up Owls side coming off the back of two big wins made a mockery of the two sides' respective positions in the league table, until Smith popped up twice to tap home rebounds.

The Owls dominated the first period but somehow could not get the crucial breakthrough despite the best effort of Gilles De Bilde back in the team after missing the midweek Cup win against Nottingham Forest.

The Belgian international went close early on after a surging run which led to a left-foot drive shaving the left-hand post. Whilst a precise pass from left-back Andy Hinchcliffe picked out De Bilde scampering down the left-wing, with the striker attempting a half-volley which just cleared the crossbar.

It was difficult to judge which team was bottom of the Premiership as the Owls went even closer on the half-hour. Skipper Peter Atherton whipped in a cross from the right-wing and Danny Sonner powered in a header which clipped the outside of the post.

chances were few and far between for Leeds during the opening period as Pavel Srnicek was only forced into a save once to stop an 18-yard drive from Michael Bridges.

Half-time: Leeds 0-0 Owls

After the break Leeds naturally came more into the game but it was Wednesday who again should have held the advantage - only to be denied by Martyn. Swedish winger Niclas Alexandersson was superbly played in by Wim Jonk, but his effort was blocked by the England keeper.

Soon afterwards Martyn pulled off the save of the game an Andy Booth header was seemingly heading into the back of the net only to be tipped over the bar by the Leeds keeper.

Against a side like Leeds you have to take your chances and it was no surprise when Wednesday were punished. Substitute Darren Huckerby angled in a shot which Srnicek spilled into the path of Smith to put the home side ahead.

Minutes later the game was over as Huckerby sent in a cross which picked out Bowyer, the midfielders shot hit the post, but Smith was on hand again to tap home his second rebound.

So disappointment for the Owls but if they can continue in this sort of form they will almost certainly move up the table and away from the relegation zone.
