Goals-galore Wednesday finish off Forest The Owls progressed into the Fourth Round of the Worthington Cup with a fine second half performance that killed poor David Platt's First Division side. The final score of 4-1 would have been very flattering for manager Danny Wilson, making it nine goals in their last two games, as his side certainly seemed to have begun to turn their season around. Forest, as expected, came out fired up and made the game awkward for Wednesday. The first half was a somewhat messy display, infront of a small Hillsborough crowd, with missed opportunities for both teams. Richard Cresswell was guilty of missing two chances - the first was a weak shot that was easy for Mark Crossley to save, and the second was a rebounded Petter Rudi shot that he should've done better with. The away side, too, had their chances. Des Walker saved the Owls from going a goal down when he charged down a powerful shot from Prutton from a Forest corner. Another effort from Schimeca was deflected but went over Pavel Srnicek's crossbar. In injury time in the first half the Owls took the lead, Richard Cresswell making up for his earlier mised efforts. A Wim Jonk free-kick was headed back by Andy Booth, and Cresswell was on hand to make sure of his header to make it 1-0. A great end to what was overall a dissapointing first half. Half-time: Owls 1-0 Forest Wilson must have had some strong and inspiring words in the changing room during the break, as the Owls turned on the style in the second period to wipe out Forest. The start of the second half saw a much improved effort by both sides, as Forest came out all guns blazing in an attempt to get back in the game. It was always going to be a tough task for the visiting side, and their chances of making it into the final 16 of the competition we just about over as Andy Booth scored his first of the season to make it 2-0. Cresswell was the creator of the goal, riding through a series of challenges from Forest defenders before picking out Booth, who simply drove the ball home. The floodgates opened with 20 minutes left as Danny Sonner, set up by Niclas Alexandersson, scored a sensational scissor kick goal to make it 3-0. Indeed, the Owls fans were really enjoying themselves after this one. Booth was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet again, as his header came back off the post just before Sonner's spectacular goal. It was 4-0 with just under ten minutes remaining, when substitute Simon Donnelly played a beautiful ball through to allow Petter Rudi to simply stroke the ball past a despairing Forest keeper. Forest did manage something from the game, when Dougie Freedman chipped Srnicek in the final five minutes - but it was nothing more than a consolation goal for an outplayed Forest side. |
