Penalty shootout wonder as Owls fly into next round After 120 minutes of goaless action at Molineux Wednesday and Wolves went to a penalty shootout and history looked like it would be cruel to the Owls once again. Five years ago at this very same stage of the FA Cup these two sides went to penalties to decide who would go through to the 5th Round - on that occasion it was Wolves who triumphed. This time it was Wednesday who caused the heartache of penalty shootout defeat. After a controversial 1-1 draw at Hillsborough two weeks ago, when a Steve Sedgeley goal was given that was later proved to have infact not crossed the line, the struggling Premier League side and the First Division outfit met once again. Owls manager Danny Wilson gave first team starts to youngsters Steven Haslam and Alan Quinn, both playing in midfield, who showed great maturity and further promise for the future of young talent at the club. The Owls made a great start, infront of a sold out crowd at Molineux, and could have been ahead as early as the 3rd minute when a Gilles de Bilde shot missed the inside of the net by inches. After an exchange of early opportunities it was Wolves who missed the best chance of the first half when Ade Akinibiyi hit the post with a close range header that should have been buried into Wednesday's net. It was a chance setup by the creativity of former Owl Andy Sinton on the wing, he was to later have further impact on the game. Half-time: Wolves 0-0 Owls The second half saw the introduction of Simon Donnelly who came on for fellow Scot Phil Scott. The majority of the second period was uneventful as both sides seemed to take a cautious approach to the game. It wasn't until extra time that a number of match winning chances came along to both side. Danny Wilson opted to bring off Belgian striker de Bilde for England Under-21 man Richard Cresswell as midfielder Danny Sonner came on for the Irish youngster Alan Quinn. With just seven minutes of normal time to go Wolves almost scored what would have been a match winner as Owls keeper Pavel Srnicek kept Wednesday in the match. Former Everton striker Michael Branch played Akinibiyi clean through on goal but his shot was brilliantly blocked by the Czech.Rep shot-stopper as he managed to fist the ball away. Moments later Northern Ireland defender Ian Nolan cleared a deflected shot off the line and away to safety. Full-time: Wolves 0-0 Owls Into extra time and Wednesday had a golden chance to win the match - first of all with just ten minutes of open play left a corner was swung across by Wim Jonk and Danny Sonner was there to power a header goal bound, before Wolves' defender Naylor cleared off the line. The rebound fell straight to Cresswell who from just six yards out should have sealed the win with his very first touch of the game, but instead smashed the ball way over the top and the chance was gone. Full-time in extra time: Wolves 0-0 Owls The full time whistle was blown and the match went down to penalties: Wolves 1-0 Owls - First up was Wolves defender Keith Curle who made no mistake with his spot kick. Wolves 1-1 Owls - Hinchcliffe blasted the ball into the roof of the net. Wolves 1-1 Owls - Paul Simpson's shot was deflected by Srnicek onto the post and away. Wolves 1-2 Owls - Wim Jonk kept his cool to put the Owls ahead. Wolves 1-2 Owls - The home side missed again as Branch missed the target badly. Wolves 1-3 Owls - Dutchman Gerald Sibon smashed the ball past Oakes with great power. Wolves 2-3 Owls - Sedgeley kept his side in the shootout with a clinical finish into the top corner. Wolves 2-3 Owls - Youngster Richard Cresswell was left gutted after his effort was saved by Oakes. Wolves 3-3 Owls - Corica slotted the ball home to give Wolves a glimmer of hope. Wolves 3-4 Owls - Former Celtic man Simon Donnelly scored to seal the win as he was mobbed by teamates. |
