Match Report

Wednesday misery continues with Dons defeat

The Owls' poor start to the season continued with a 2-1 defeat at Selhurst Park to Wimbledon. The morale of the team appeared to be low followed the embarassing exit in the League Cup to Third Division side Cambridge Utd earlier in the week.

After that mid-week humiliation defeat Danny Wilson changed the team around significantly for the first time this season. The main shock was that there was no place in the starting line-up for Italian Paolo DiCanio and he was replaced by youngster Alan Quinn, who made his debut. Juan Cobian and Petter Rudi were also left out and there were places in the team for Jon Newsome and Lee Briscoe.

For the second game in a row Wednesday conceded a goal in the first few minutes. This time the Owls defence struggled to defend off a Dons throw-in and Euell fired in to make it 1-0. The first half continued to go Wimbledon's way and Wednesday failed to even test the Don's keeper Sullivan as Wimbledon looked like they were coasting to victory.

Half-time: Wimbledon 1-0 Owls

Shortly after the break it got worse for Wednesday when Euell struck again to make it 2-0. Owls boss Danny Wilson then made the substitution a lot of Owls fans were been waiting to see when Di Canio came on for Quinn in the 46th minute.

Di Canio soon showed why he's just too good to leave out when in 84th minute he pulled one back for the Owls, although it turned out to be just too late. It was his third goal of the season but couldn't prevent Wednesday from dropping another 3 points and make it four league defeats in six games.
