Owls hammer West Ham weaklings

After losing in the FA Cup to Swansea and recieving a 4-1 thrashing at Old Trafford against Manchester Utd this week - it was perhaps inevitable that West Ham's week of misery would be complete, by a Wednesday side that looked unstoppable.

The Owls have at times this season looked clueless infront of goal, but 1999 has seen Wednesday two four-goal performances already. The other one was a few weeks back in a 4-1 win over Norwich City in the FA Cup, this one however was far more convincing with the Owls defence also keeping a clean sheet.

The Wednesday line-up saw Danny Sonner return to replace the suspended Dejan Stefanovic. There was still no Andy Booth (ankle injury) and so Ritchie Humphreys continued his partnership upfront with Benito Carbone. West Ham were without Ian Wright or John Hartson, who they'd sold to Wimbledon for £7.5m a few days before this game.

Wednesday's little Italian Benny Carbone has blossomed during the time fellow Italian striker Paolo Di Canio has been AWOL in Italy. He showed early on this game that form wasn't about to change with an attempted chip that was tipped over by West Ham keeper Shaka Hislop. Wim Jonk then had a well struck shot blocked by Eyal Berkovic from a corner not cleared by the West Ham defence.

In the 26th minute Wednesday had their opener - Jonk and Carbone combined well together to pick out Hinchcliffe on the left hand side and his shot was deflected over the line by Hislop.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 to Wednesday. Dutch midfielder Wim Jonk had acres of space in the middle of the park, and he released Rudi who ran through to blast home his third goal this season. West Ham youngster Joe Cole was brought on just before half-time to replace the injured Neil Ruddock but he would have little influence on the outcome of this game.

Half-time West Ham 0-2 Owls

After the interval, West Ham came out on the attack as expected. But Harry Redknapp's men just couldn't find a way past an Owls defence that has been outstanding this season thanks to the formed partnership between Walker and Thome at the heart of defence.

Wednesday hit back and killed the game off with a third goal. Niclas Alexandersson swung a right-wing cross in and Humphreys was there to stab home his third goal in as many games.

The Owls were really rampant now and a fourth was perhaps on the cards. Carbone nutmegged Keller on the touchline before being clumsily brought down by Ian Pearce in the box. The ref pointed to the spot instantly and before normal penalty-taker, Wim Jonk, could get there Benny had already thrashed the ball into the top corner to make it 4-0.

It was a fantastic win for Wednesday and they have to make sure that in the upcoming weeks they show this kind of form to really boost themselves up the table. All eyes are back to the FA Cup next week with a visit from Stockport County in the 4th round.
