Match Report

Goal-shy Wednesday draw with struggling Southampton

It's now six hours of football since Wednesday last scored a goal. The month of October has just been one disaster after another with four games played and no goals scored. The dropped points at home to teams like Everton and Southampton could prove costly at the end of the season.

There was still no Benito Carbone (ankle injury) despite reports suggesting he was ok to play. Petter Rudi wasn't 100% match fit but did play in the second half. There was also still no sign of Juan Cobian and Peter Atherton continued his fill in at right-back. One of the positive's that came out of the game was the improving form of Swede midfielder Niclas Alexandersson who is looking better every game since his return from long term injury.

There were plenty of bums in seats with a 30,000 crowd at Hillsborough - but this was mainly due to the fact that 10,000 free tickets were given away to kids around Sheffield.

The first half was dull and there were very few chances. Owls old boy Carlton Palmer was covering every blade of grass and Wednesday's attack was visibly weak. Possibly the best chance of the first half was when Pressman came off his line and bravely gathered the ball from Ostenstad's feet.

Half-time: Owls 0-0 Southampton

Poor Andy Booth was having a horrible afternoon. He was taunted and booed by the home support whenever he made a mistake and if anyone is to leave Hillsborough in the next few weeks it will surely be him.

There was a late scramble by Wednesday as they frantically pushed men forward in attempt to grab a late winner. Nothing is going Wednesday's way at the moment and the calls for Danny Wilson to pull out the cheque book and sign some new players are even greater now. A Di-Canio-less Wednesday seems to be a goal-less-Wednesday.
