Doomed Forest defeat woeful Wednesday report from Official Swfc site Ron Atkinson came back to haunt his former club as Nottingham Forest ran out 2-0 winners and left the Owls still looking for the point that would secure Premiership safety. Forest stunned the visitors with two early goals. The first from Portuguese International Hugo Porfirio who scored with a fine individual effort in the 14th minute and the second just two minutes later saw Alan Rogers convert with a deflected effort which looped beyond goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek. Although Wednesday tried to fight back Beni Carbone's second half penalty miss summed up the Owls afternoon. Although Relegated Forest played as if a great weight had been lifted from their shoulders and looked determined to go down in style as they created a number of chances throughout the game. First Marlon Harewood capitalised on excellent work by Porfirio but shot wastefully into the side netting after creating an excellent opening. Then it needed a great covering tackle by Forest old boy Des Walker, to deny Dougie Freedman a shooting chance. At the other end Emerson Thome had a header deflected over the Forest bar from Wim Jonk's cross but it was Forest who were dominating and in the 14th minute they took the lead through a player who spent a trial spell at Hillsborough earlier in the season. Porfirio, on loan from Benfica, intercepted a back pass before dancing past a couple of challenges and despatching a low shot beyond Pavel Srnicek. A set-back for Wednesday became a calamity minutes later. The Owls defence failed to deal with a corner from Chris Bart-Williams, and when Alan Rogers speculated with a left-foot shot, it took a deflection before looping up over a stunned Srnicek. Two nil down Danny Wilson's men had to fight back and they nearly pulled a goal back when Peter Atherton's surge down the right wing and subsequent cross found Petter Rudi in the box, but the Norwegian international somehow managed to plant the ball at the feet of Forest 'keeper Mark Crossley. The five minutes before the break Wednesday playmaker, Beni Carbone, had a chance to halve Forest's lead but his free kick from a yard outside the box curled over the Forest bar. There was still time in the remaining minutes of the first half for Forest to create another chance. Harewood pulled the ball back for the in-rushing Freedman but after evading one tackle his touch deserted him and Srnicek saved a lot easier than he anticipated. Half-time: Forest 2-0 Owls The second half was an extremely scrappy affair until Chris Bart-Williams, playing against his former club went close with a long range effort over the Wednesday bar. But in the 54th minute Wednesday spurned a great chance to get back into the contest when they missed a penalty. It was conceded by Carlton Palmer for a lunge on Danny Sonner but Crossley, boosting his impressive record of saves from the spot, flung himself full length to his left to turn away Carbone's effort. With that kick Wednesday's chance all but evaporated leaving Danny Wilson still looking over his shoulder at the relegation scrap below. |
