Petter late than never for Wednesday
When looking at the last 5 or 6 results Wednesday have had some would say a draw at St James Park is
a fantastic result - but it so easily could've been a win and maximum points taken.
Owls new-boy Srnicek recieved a warming welcome from the home support on his big return
to his former club. Wednesday welcomed back into the team Italian Carbone who replaced Humphreys upfront. The ever present Walker was also there despite some worries he would be forced to sit this one out through injury.
Wednesday got off to a terrible start when young Dalglish scored his first Premier League goal for Newcastle after just 5 mins. Barton's shot was deflected off Dalglish, and although Srnicek saved there was no
stopping the young Scot on the rebound.
Booth, who broke his goal famine last weekend against Leeds, almost drew the scores level on 17 mins
when his header over Given was cleared off the line by Hughes, after Sonner had put him clean through on
goal. On 29 mins the Owls had another chance - this time to Alexandersson who was one-on-one with Given
but couldn't find a way through.
Just before half-time, Gary Speed had a 25-yard shot turned away by Srnicek much to the home support's
frustration.
Half-time: Newcastle 1-0 Owls
On the half-hour mark Danny Wilson made his first change by bringing on Magilton for Carbone - a move which clearly didn't impress the little Italian as he stormed off down the tunnel. There was also no Shearer for the Geordies - a player they would really miss in the 2nd half.
It was from here on in where Wednesday enjoyed their best spell of the match and put the Newcastle defence under some immense pressure. It finally paid off for the Owls 10 mins from time when Rudi arrived in the box inbetween 2 Newcastle defenders to stab the ball in
from close range - his first goal for Wednesday in 32 appearances. Wednesday could've snatched a late winner too through Booth but his header was stopped bravely by Serrant.
A point salvaged moving Wednesday one place up the table but Danny Wilson said after the game he felt a bit dissapointed it wasn't all 3 points taken.
Next week Wednesday return to Hillsborough after 2 away games where they play Manchester United. A daunting task perhaps with the form Alex Ferguson's
men have shown in the last few weeks.
