Late Cresswell strike seals win for Owls

report from Official Swfc site

Super sub Richard Cresswell came off the bench in dramatic fashion with a first Wednesday goal three minutes from time as the Owls finally secured the points that ensures Premiership safety.

The England U21 striker was on the field for just a few minutes as he headed home from close range after Danny Sonner's corner has picked him out of a crowded penalty box.

Going into the game Owls boss, Danny Wilson sprung a surprise with young England U20 defender, Stephen Haslam handed his debut at fullback and Peter Atherton handed man marking duties on Steve McManaman with the Wednesday skipper largely snuffing out the threat of the maverick midfielder.

However up until Cresswell's introduction the game seemed to be heading for a draw despite both teams having numerous scoring chances particularly in the first half.

Indeed Liverpool had two early chances with Oyvind Leonhardsen and Patrik Berger being denied by Pavel Srnicek with short range and long range shots respectively.

At the other end Andy Booth was a hair away from scoring but couldn't quite get his head to Peter Atherton's far post cross that raced across the Liverpool goal. Then Petter Rudi could and should have put the Owls ahead just minutes later as an Atherton long throw was flicked into the area by Booth's head. Rudi appeared to have timed his run perfectly but blazed the ball over from short range.

Then late in the half both sides had further opportunities, at one end Paul Ince saw his header from a Berger header sail just inches over the crossbar whilst on 45 minutes Carbone found himself unmarked from a Sonner long pass but Friedel produced a great save to deny the Italian.

Half-time: Owls 0-0 Liverpool

The second period failed to live up to the first but although both sides still enjoyed chances. Patrick Berger saw his snapshot from the edge of the area go wide.

Whilst Wim Jonk, who enjoyed one of his more effective games saw a bullet like snap-shot power wide with Friedel seemingly beaten.

However the game had a definite sting in its tail as Cresswell grabbed the glory to send the Hillsborough faithful into raptures.
