Match Report

Owls revival comes to an end

Hopes of a victory at Anfield and a continued revival by Wednesday were diminished by half-time as Liverpool, who didn't perform particularly well in the first period, scored two goals and killed the game off.

Wednesday fancied themselves to get a result from their trip Liverpool, and under the circumstances this perhaps would not have been such an upset. Liverpool have made their worst start in 41 years and have lost 8 of their last 11 games.

Before the game there were various demonstrations towards the Sheffield Wednesday board urging them to set up a memorial at the Leppings Lane end to remember those who died back in 1989.

The game began in a fierce fashion with Sonner crunching Ince early on. The Liverpool midfielder was on the recieving end of it again on 15 mins when Hinchcliffe fouled him and was cautioned by the referee. Only a few minutes later Liverpool's own Bjornebye went into the referee's notebook for a foul on Carbone.

Wednesday did have chances early on, Rudi's cross went right across the goal mouth - but there were no players in a blue and white shirt to finish it off. Then Sonner's volley went sailing over the bar after the Liverpool defence hadn't quite cleared another Rudi cross.

Liverpool, unlike the Owls, took full advantage of their chance when it came on 19 mins. A corner was layed off by Fowler to Berger and the Czech fired it home on his right-foot from 15 yards past Srnicek.

The goal seemed to spark the Reds into life and it put Wednesday on the backfoot. Redknapp came close on a few occasions. A second Liverpool goal was on the cards and it came 10 minutes before the break from that man (boy?) Owen. Liverpool's two Norwegians combined and the star teenager did the rest - a drilled shot into the corner.

Half-time: Liverpool 2-0 Owls

Danny Wilson certainly had a few words to say to the players at the half-time break - his Wednesday team came out of the dressing room fired up. It would've been disaster for the Owls if, 5 minutes after the restart, Owen had rounded Srnicek and slotted home to make it 3-0, luckily he didn't and the chance was missed.

The game flowed on with Liverpool having the odd chance here and there but Wednesday just couldn't find a way past a Liverpool defence which has at times this season been a joke. On 65 mins the travelling Owls fans must've thought their team had pulled one back when a right-wing cross was headed just over from Booth.

Liverpool had chances late on to add to their lead but to no avail. A dissapointing result for Wednesday who perhaps had hoped for more. Next up it's Leicester City at Hillsborough on Boxing Day. Ofcourse this date was pencilled in for the return of Di Canio. The Italian has dissapeared in Italy and his whereabouts is unknown. It certainly hasn't impressed Danny Wilson or the fans to that matter and we're all left wondering if the pizza eating genius has played his last game in a Sheffield Wednesday shirt.
