Match Report

Owls goal drought over but defeat all the same

After four games without a goal it took Andy Booth just 3 mins to end not only Wednesday's goal drought but his own personal nightmare infront of goal with his first goal of the season. It wasn't enough however, as Leeds came back to win a somewhat dissapointing Yorkshire derby.

There was still no Carbone - he's still out with his niggling anke injury but there was a return for Norwegian midfielder Petter Rudi.

Wednesday went ahead after on 3 mins when a Danny Sonner corner was headed in by Booth. This was the Yorkshireman's 3rd goal in successive seasons at Elland Road - a happy hunting ground for him. It was clearly a huge morale booster for him as he ran to Owls fans with sheer delight and was mobbed by his teammates.

It could've been 2-0 a few minutes later when a Hinchcliffe cross was fumbled by Leed's keeper Nigel Martyn but Booth couldn't score from the tight angle.

The Owls were looking in control throughout the first half but disaster struck 5 minutes before half-time for Wednesday when a goalkeeping error by Kevin Pressman enabled Hasselbaink, another player going through a personal goal famine, to hook the ball into an empty net to make to make it 1-1 going into the break.

Half-time: Leeds 1-1 Owls

The second half was unlike what you'd expect from a derby match. There was little passion and few chances but Leeds seemed in control. Leeds snatched their winner on 61 mins when 18-year-old Woodgate headed in despite claims that Pressman was being impeded.

Danny Wilson desperately attempted to get something out of the game by putting Jon Newsome of all people upfront in replace of Humphries. Right at the end there was big calls of a penalty by the Wednesday players when Booth was brought down in the area by Ian Harte but the referee called a goal-kick. The TV replays suggested perhaps Mr Keith Burge was wrong.

Wilson certainly didn't hide the fact he thought it was a penalty when he said after the game "I think the ref will be quite embarassed when he see's that one again." So the goal famine is over at last, but it's now 5 games without a win for Wednesday and next up a difficult trip to the North-East to face Newcastle Utd. But hey - only 47 days until Boxing Day!
