Match Report

Late goal ends Owls FA Cup dream

Any dreams of making a trip to Wembley this season were brought to an end dissapointingly when title chasers Chelsea scored the simplest of goals late on to seal the game and knock out the Owls when the match seemed destined for a replay.

There was a return to the team for Kevin Pressman with Pavel Srnicek out suspended and Dejan Stefanovic replaced Andy Hinchcliffe at left-back, with the England man suffering from a knee injury which could see an end to his season.

Beni Carbone was looking to continue his fine form right from the start of this one and fired a shot just wide of the Chelsea goal. Former-Owls man Dan Petrescu certainly getting the abuse he deserves from Owls fans and he hit the side netting with a good opportunity.

Roberto Di Matteo came on for Albert Ferrer on the half hour mark when the Spaniard limped off injured making way for the Italian. He made an impression early on and came the closest to breaking the deadlock with a shot that went just wide from a Vialli pass. Wednesday's Dutch midfielder Wim Jonk tried his luck from 25 yards and forced a good save out of De Goey.

Half-time Owls 0-0 Chelsea

The second half continued much in the same fashion as the first, with not much goalmouth action and it certainly appeared that this tie would be heading for a replay at Stamford Bridge.

Babayaro cut inside the Wednesday box but fired straight at Pressman. Carbone also had a few long range shots at goal.

On 72 minutes Wednesday undoubtedly had their best chance of the game when Carbone picked out Stefanovic who squared the ball across the Chelsea box where Niclas Alexandersson whose effort was saved by De Goey and second attempt was blocked by Desailly before the Blues managed to scramble the ball away.

It was with just five minutes left when Chelsea would strike the killer blow. Substitute Goldbaek was in acres of space on the right wing with his marker Lee Briscoe nowhere to be seen and Goldbaek picked out Di Matteo unmarked at back post to head in the simplest of goals to send the London side into the draw for the last 8 and end Wednesday's Wembley dreams for this season.
