Match Report

Humphreys double helps Owls fly into 4th round

It's FA Cup time again and the 3rd round draw was fortunate enough to give Wednesday a home draw, and better still a First Division side in Norwich City. Although there's no such thing as an easy tie in the FA Cup, Wednesday boss Danny Wilson can only hope for a home draw.

There was no Booth in the Wednesday team - he sat this one out through an ankle injury so there was a recall to the team for young Humphreys.

It came as a bit of a suprise to see Norwich were enjoying the better of the play in the opening 15 minutes but didn't look like scoring. Wednesday did just that however when it took Humphreys just 18 minutes to open the scoring, after personally not scoring for an amazing 23 months! He ran onto a superb pass from Carbone and the 21-year-old slotted it home between legs to make it 1-0 to the Owls.

On the half-hour mark it was two for Wednesday and two for Humphreys. Carbone set him up with a cross and the youngster, at first was denied by the legs of Watt, fired home to double his goal tally for the season.

Norwich never looked like really threatening the Owls backline and with 5 minutes left of the first half it was 3-0. A long ball by Hinchcliffe picked out Humphreys who sent Rudi through and the Norwegian rounded the Norwich keeper and made him pick the ball out of the net for the third time in the space of 40 minutes.

Perhaps the flattering scoreline caused the Owls to sit back a bit, but Norwich pulled one back right on half-time. From a Norwich corner, Roberts headed past Srnicek and all of a sudden the Canaries has a glimpse of a comeback.

Half-time: Owls 3-1 Norwich

The second half saw very little goalmouth action as Wednesday made sure there would be no such comeback by the East-Anglian side.

The Owls had a goal ruled out midway through the second period when Alexandersson was adjudged offside. On 73 minutes Wednesday did have their fourth. A Hinchcliffe corner was scrappily bundled over the line by Stefanovic - the Yugoslav celebrated his first goal of the season despite being sent-off a few weeks ago in the 1-2 loss at Villa.

The 4th round draw was, to the disgust of both managers, made during this match and Wednesday were given another home tie in the next stage. Stockport County, another Division One side, will make the visit to Hillsborough at the end of this month as the Road to Wembley begins for the Owls!
