Match Report

Wednesday stalemate again

It's now 3 games in a row that Wednesday have failed to score, 3 games without our inspirational Paolo Di Canio who will be sorely missed until Boxing Day when he returns for the home clash against Leicester City.

Both these teams have struggled infront of goal this season, Everton haven't as yet managed to score at home so a 0-0 draw was perhaps the likely outcome in the rainy conditions at Hillsborough.

Once again there was no Juan Cobian who is supposedly injured and Owls skipper Peter Atherton filled in at right-back once again. Andy Hinchcliffe returned after his one-match suspension but there was no Petter Rudi or Beni Carbone who were ruled out with injuries. Danny Sonner made his home debut as well.

Everton sustained some early pressure from the Owls and then after 5 mins Duncan Ferguson's angled shot was well saved by Pressman. 10 minutes later Everton came close again when new signing Bakayoko, who was linked with a move to Hillsborough in the summer, had a shot skim the post. This was followed by a superb tackle by Thome when Bakayoko was almost through on goal.

Wednesday's best chance of the half came just before half-time, when a cross by Alexandersson was struck first time by Humphreys but his shot flew just wide.

Half-time Owls 0-0 Everton

Just after the restart Everton came close again when Bakayoko's shot was superbly pushed over the bar by Owls inform keeper Pressman. Wednesday fans thought the goal famine was over when Humphreys shot appeared to be flying into the top corner but instead missed by inches.

Right at the end Wednesday almost stole the points when Booth thought he had ended his personal goal famine - only for Cleland to clear off the line.

A point a piece in the end and Wednesday's lack of firepower upfront will surely end when the Owls play bottom club Southampton next week at Hillsborough. With Di Canio out until Christmas, Danny Wilson will be feeling the pressure to sign a new striker.
