Match Report

Wednesday's Sky blues

Wednesday's poor record down the years against Coventry continued when the Owls slumped to a 1-0 defeat over the Sky Blues. We all know we don't play well when the Sky camera's are there so that didn't help.

There was no Petter Rudi (injury) or Juan Cobian (injury?) and Danny Wilson gave a debut to new £75,000 signing from Ipswich Danny Sonner. Captain Atherton slotted into right-back and there was also a place in the team or re-called Lee Briscoe with Hinchcliffe serving a one match suspension after his sending off against Middlesbrough.

In the first 15 to 20 mins Wednesday dominated play but didn't make too many chances but were obviously frustrating Coventry. The games first real chance fell to Gary McAllister, making his first appearance since coming back from injury, when he cracked a shot from 30 yards and Pressman made a great save as he seemed to be going the other way but managed to punch it away.

On the 30 minute mark Wednesday almost scored when a Booth header seemed to be heading into the roof of the net before Hedlom tipped it over the bar. Just before half time Booth, who was winning everything in the air, had another effort go just wide. The Owls had had the better of the first half but no goals to show for it.

Half-time: Coventry 0-0 Owls

Right after half-time Dion Dublin should've put Coventry ahead after some sloppy defending by the Owls but somehow he hit the post from only a few yards out. One of Wednesday's few second half efforts came from an ambitious shot by Carbone but he slipped and his effort went miles wide.

In the 61st minute Dublin squandered another chance after some good work by Noel Whelan and a good save by Pressman. In the 75th minute Coventry finally scored when Whelan crossed from the right hand side and Dublin was there to knock it in past Pressman and into the net.

Wednesday couldn't find a way through in the final 15 minutes and Coventry had won their only game since the opening game of the season. For Wednesday it's now been only 3 goals scored in the last 6 games. Danny Wilson has said he is looking to bring more quality into the squad and surely a striker is top of the shopping list.
