Owls stalemate kills of Chelsea title hopes

report from Official Swfc site

Wednesday are still looking for a couple more points to guarantee Premiership safety but it was a good performance by the Owls to deny a Chelsea side the three points so vital to their title aspirations.

The game was far from a classic but Wednesday rediscovered their defensive resilience with their first clean sheet in 12 games as Chelsea's attacks floundered.

Danny Wilson's men now in all probability need just one more point to guarantee their survival. The Owls are now eight points clear of Southampton and Charlton with just three games to go and considering Wednesday's strong goal difference one more point would be enough.

With Petter Rudi away on international duty Danny Wilson handed a full debut to Irish U21 winger, Mark McKeever, who despite a nervous start looks a highly promising prospect.

Ironically it was McKeever's early mistake that nearly saw Chelsea take the lead. Bjarne Goldbaek should have done better but his left-foot shot sailed wide of Pavel Srnicek's right-hand post.

However despite this mistake the young winger got better as the game went on and had two decent opportunities in either half. The first saw him drill a left-foot drive wide in the first half and the second saw him volley over the crossbar 10 minutes after the break.

At the other end Chelsea had a couple of half chances as Mikael Forssell turned and shot in the box but his effort was deflected for a corner and then player-boss, Gianluca Vialli Vialli flicked a near-post downward header into the side-netting.

Half-time: Owls 0-0 Chelsea

In the second half an increasingly frustrated Vialli fired another near post chance off the edge of the post and into the side-netting but it was a largely disappointing attacking effort from Chelsea with the best of the chances falling to the home side.

Beni Carbone came closest, following a through ball free-kick from Wim Jonk, but his long range effort grazed Kevin Hitchcock's crossbar.

Richard Cresswell had a late shot blocked and Des Walker slipped when Hitchcock was stranded on the floor and the goal was at his mercy.

Somehow the breakthrough could not come as both sides ground out a draw.
