Owls salvage point from Stamford Bridge The month of October was just one big nightmare for Wednesday with not even one goal scored and there were serious worries of relegation. Owls fans might've paniced slightly when they saw the upcoming fixtures at the start of November - Leeds, Newcastle and Chelsea away and Manchester Utd at home. It's not been that story however as Wednesday have managed to pick up a win and 2 draws in these tough games. Wednesday's recent revivial continued when they managed to come away from Stamford Bridge with a respectable 1-1 draw - a result which Danny Wilson will be very pleased with knowing that Chelsea had gone 18 games undefeated. Both teams stayed the same after successes last week (Chelsea beating Leicester 4-2 and the Owls upsetting Manchester Utd 3-1 at Hillsborough). One may point out that there was not one English player in Chelsea's starting line-up. Srnickek continued to keep Pressman on the subs bench - Danny Wilson will be delighted with his performances so far and the fact that he got the Czech Rep. keeper on a free. Wednesday almost had the dream start when, in the opening minute, Booth headed just wide from an Alexandersson cross. It was then Chelsea who dominated most of the action in front of goal. On 17 mins Italian midfielder Di Matteo had a low shot from the edge of the area saved by Srnicek. Chelsea were to open the scoring 10 mins later however when Nigerian Babayaro skinned Atherton down the left and delivered a teasing cross which reached Zola at the back post - and the smallest man on the field heading home to make it 1-0 to Chelsea. Half-time: Chelsea 1-0 Owls On 57 mins Wednesday should've levelled the scores when Booth broke the offside trap and was one-on-one with De Goey but the shot went just wide and Chelsea were let off the hook. At the other end, Srnicek continued to impress with a string of superb saves to keep Wednesday in the game. The Owls deservedly got their equaliser however on 67 mins when Alexandersson crossed for Booth who headed home his second goal of the season. After the game Danny Wilson was fuming that Wednesday weren't awarded a penalty when just a few minutes after Wednesday's equaliser Desailly appeared to handle the ball but nothing was given. Both teams had opportunites to win the game right at the end. Chelsea's chance fell to ex-Owls defender Petrescu - who unsuccessfully tried to lob Srnicek. Then it was Wednesday's turn when substitute Humphreys broke the offside trap and played it across into the Chelsea box only to find no-one was there to apply the finishing touch. After a good run of results Wednesday will be hoping to pick up maximum points in their next two matches in which Nottingham Forest and Charlton visit Hillsborough. |
