High flying Owls destroy Addicks
The Owls good form of recent continued today with a comfortable 3-0 win over struggling Charlton Athletic, who despite a spirited start to this seasons campaign have found life in the Premier League isn't so rosy. For Wednesday, the results are finally coming their way and the relegation zone is all of a sudden not such of a worry.
Danny Wilson warned his players before the game of under estimating Charlton and didn't want any slip-up's. He kept with the same starting line-up for the fifth game in a row and it certainly seems to be working with the Owls beaten only once in nine matches. The question is though, will Paolo come straight back into a team that is finally stringing the results together?
Surpisingly, Charlton had the better share of the opening 10 minutes and after just 40 seconds they should've been ahead when somehow Redfearn and Kinsella messed up the chance after a lucky deflection had let Wednesday off the hook. The Addicks continued to press for an early goal but it didn't come - they would've been disheartened when Booth scored only his second goal of the season. Hinchcliffe's cross was headed down by Thome and Booth controlled well before turning and firing it in.
The goal was a booster for Wednesday and they almost hit Charlton again when a fantastic through ball by Carbone to Alexandersson had to be dealt with by Illic. Charlton continued to battle in search for an equaliser and some sloppy defending at times by Wednesday was much to the frustration of the Owls fans as another tense game seemed on the cards.
Little Italian forward Carbone has been playing superbly over the last couple of weeks but he was booked on 32 minutes for argueing a decision with the referee. Despite having the best disciplinary record in the Premier League this season, this was to be a game where three bookings were handed out to Owls players.
Half-time: Owls 1-0 Charlton
The second half saw little action but two goals - both ending up in the Charlton net. It was on 64 minutes when Wednesday finally added to their lead through some superb individual skill by Carbone. He turned his man well and fired a curling shot into the top corner, a possible goal of the season contender perhaps.
It was 3-0 on 77 minutes - that man Carbone was involved again. This time his cross was fired in from close range by Rudi who celebrated his first goal at home. The win was sealed and it almost got worse for Charlton when Booth thought he'd added a fourth only to find out his strike was ruled out through offside.
Wednesday have come through their two recent home games with maximum points, but next week it's a stern test for Danny Wilson when the Owls travel away to Liverpool who themselves are in a crisis.
