Owls send Charlton crashing

report from Official Swfc site

Wednesday ended an inconsistent season on a high note and in the process sent Charlton crashing back towards Division One as substitute, Danny Sonner, grabbed the Owls late winner.

Peter Atherton was sent-off soon afterwards for a second bookable offence but Danny Wilson's men clung on for the win that sends plucky Charlton back down to the Division from which they won promotion last season.

However the game could have been so different because with Wednesday having nothing but pride to play for and the home side fighting for their Premiership lives, it was the Addicks who came out firing and Wednesday had to absorb a first half of intense pressure.

However not before the Owls enjoyed an early chance as Petter Rudi found Niclas Alexandersson in yards of space on the edge of the penalty area but Charlton keeper Petterson was equal to the challenge and saved well at his near post.

After that it was all Athletic as first a Pav Srnicek punch fell to Graham Stuart some 20 yards out but with the goal at his mercy the former Sheffield United player's first-time volley sailed agonisingly past the far post.

Then another former Blades, Carl Tiler went close with another header from a Mark Kinsella free-kick as Charlton continued to up the tempo. The Addicks went closer still after 31 minutes when Brown's intelligent movement in the box bought him enough space to meet Kinsella's free-kick only to see his header come back off the cross bar with Srnicek beaten.

The Valley erupted just before half-time as striker Clive Mendonca stabbed the ball home after Pavel Srnicek had parried Steve Brown's drive, however home celebrations were soon tempered as the goal was ruled off-side by the referee and the linesman.

Half-time: Charlton 0-0 Owls

A sense of desperation gripped Charlton in the second half as news came through that Southampton were leading Everton at the Dell and Dutch midfielder Wim Jonk turned defender clearing Tiler's header away from the Wednesday goal-line.

Sensing Wednesday's defensive solidarity Alan Curbishley then rang the changes, bringing on John Barnes, Mark Bowen and Martin Pringle but they failed to make the impact.

Robinson created room for himself with a mazy run but then wasted his good work with a tame shot that was easily saved by Srnicek, and as news came through that Southampton were heading for victory the balance of play switched to the visitors as Charlton fans and players alike realised that they were almost certain to be relegated.

Wednesday capitalised on this disappointment with a well taken goal, as Danny Sonner, on for Benito Carbone, played a delightful one-two with Alexandersson, before chipping over the advancing Petterson to hammer the final nail into Charlton's Premiership coffin.

After that it was a matter of playing out time as Wednesday continued to defend in numbers, Charlton are relegated, Danny Wilson's men by contrast can look ahead to the new season with a degree of confidence.

A final 12th place finish, young talent starting to breakthrough, summer signings to bolster the team, Beni Carbone set to sign a new deal and even the possibility of European football via the Fair Play League, all in all the new season couldn't come soon enough.
