Owls Ewood revenge This fixture last season saw the Owls embarrasingly thrashed 7-2 at the hands of Blackburn. This time around it was a case of Ewood revenge for Wednesday as they hit Blackburn hard with an impressive performance and recorded their third away win in a row - a feat which the Owls haven't done since the 1992/93 season. It was the first half effort that settled the game and Andy Booth's early header that went wide was a taste of things to come for Rovers. Damien Duff sent an effort of his own sailing wide and then Peter Atherton was forced to block another shot by the Irishman. It was 1-0 after 20 minutes though when Danny Sonner scored his first goal for the club since his £75,000 move from Ipswich earlier this season. Andy Booth nodded down Beni Carbone's cross for the Northern Ireland international to squeeze in from a tight angle. Rover's never looked comfortable at the back after that and the lead was doubled before the break when Carbone pulled it back for Norwegian midfielder Rudi to fire into the top corner from the edge of the box. After the Owls went 2-0 up Rover's missed their opportunity to get back into the game and would later be punished for it. Duff was back in the action when his shot hit the underside of the bar and Keith Gillespie fired the ball into the side netting. Just two minutes before the interval the game as a contest was virtually over when Rudi grabbed his second of the game and Wednesday's third. The move started with Rudi releasing Wim Jonk down the left who returned the ball for the tall Norwegian who headed in well. Half-time: Blackburn 0-3 Owls After the break Rovers tried desperatly to get back into the game but to no avail. Infact it was Wednesday who came the closest to scoring again when Carbone had a shot magnificently saved by Blackburn keeper John Filan. Wednesday almost had a fourth when Rud, who was playing out of his skin, cleverly beat the offside trap but played the ball too far ahead for Swede Niclas Alexandersson and the chance went begging. Rovers did pull one back though in the 68th minute when Jason McAteer scored his first goal for Blackburn with a long range shot that deflected past Pressman. In the 82nd minute it was 4-1 as Booth took his chance well and pounced on a defensive mistake by Broomes to settle the game once and for all. |
