Match Report

Di Canio madness as Owls pull of late win

As far as the result went Wednesday could't have wished for more. A battled effort by the players and a last minute strike by sub Lee Briscoe sealed all three points. But this game won't be remembered just for the win, it will be remembered for the match when Paolo DiCanio disgraced himself and Sheffield Wednesday and put a huge shadow of doubt over his future at Hillsborough with a rush of blood and an attack on referee Paul Alcock.

Wednesday went into the game knowing they have a good record over the Londeners and Owls fans will remember last seasons 2-0 win over the Gunners in what was Ron Atkinsons first game in charge.

There were few chances in the first half - Arsenal coming close on a few occasions through Ray Parlour and Nicholas Anelka but some good goalkeeping by Pressman kept Arsenal at bay. There was a blow early on for the Owls when Andy Booth went off injured and was replaced by youngster Ritchie Humphreys. Just before half time was when all the drama began.

It started when a foul by Wim Jonk on Frenchman Patrick Vierra over erupted and lead to both sets of players trying to calm each other down and a tussle went off between DiCanio and Arsenal's Martin Keown in which a punch was thrown and a retalited kick by Di Canio.

The referee Paul Alcock tried to settle everyone down and then dished out a red card to Di Canio who was already extremely wound up. He then outlashed and pushed the referee over resulting in the match official stumbling backwards pathetically before falling on his backside.

The fired up Italian then left the field in distress with blood on his face and manager Danny Wilson stood on the touchline in disbelief. Meanwhile referee Alcock picked himself up and somewhere along the line gave Martin Keown his marching orders too, and so both teams were down to 10 men. Alcock went to the touchline to speak with Wilson and a few words were exchanged but after the match Wilson said he was simply advising Alcock to take a breather and regain control of the match.

Half-time: Owls 0-0 Arsenal

So the teams went into the break at 0-0 and after the break Wednesday brought off Swede Niclas Alexandersson for Lee Briscoe. Arsenal continued to look the more likely to make the breakthrough with a number of chances of which Pressman was equal to and pulled off some magnificent saves.

Wednesday also had their chances, Emerson Thome came close towards the end but Alex Manninger tipped his effort over the bar. Briscoe also should've scored when he was picked out unmarked in the box by Petter Rudi but his headed effort was saved well by Manninger.

The match winning goal came when Jonk sent Briscoe away in the clear before chipping the Arsenal keeper from the edge of the box in sensational fashion to send the Hillsborough crowd mad. Infact Wednesday could and should have had a second only a few minutes later when Humphreys was one-on-one with Manninger but the shot agonisingly wide.

It didn't matter in the end though - Wednesday had won and put behind them the memories of that Worthington Cup exit to Cambridge United in mid-week. But the talking point of the game was the disgraceful sending off of Di Canio and Wednesday fans await to see if Paulo will ever play in a Wednesday shirt again, is this is one time too many the tempremental Italian has lost his rag?
