the report

How do you steal a point? It's elementary my dear Watson!

Steve Watson returned to haunt his old club with an equaliser in the sixth minute of injury time to steal a point for Wednesday at The Hawthorns. Kevin Phillips had scored what seemed to be the winning goal late on in what had been a fairly one sided match but Watson, who was on West Brom's books last season, caused outrage with his late, late goal.

Brian Laws had been forced to draft in 17 year old Mark Beevers at the last minute with first choice centre-back Michael Johnson suffering from a bad back. The only other change to the side that won at Plymouth on the weekend was the return of Glenn Whelan into midfield at the expense of Yoann Folly. The Irishman had served a one match suspension for collecting his fifth yellow card of the season.

While the headlines were all about the drama at the end of the game there was also some controversy in the first half when a Frank Simek own goal was ruled out because of offside. Ishmael Miller's cross were diverted by the American defender past Lee Grant but the linesman had ruled that Phillips was in an offside position, much to the disgust of the home fans.

Marcus Tudgay had a great chance to open the scoring for Wednesday when he headed wide from a Whelan free-kick, while at the other end Grant was proving to be in top form to keep The Baggies at bay. He tipped a powerful effort by Miller wide and from the resulting corner dangerman Phillips crashed an effort back off the post.

The home side continued to dominate the chances in the second half but Wednesday held firm thanks to more brilliant goalkeeping from Grant who denied Miller and Phillips on numerous occasions, and also saving wonderfully from a Paul Robinson header at the back post.

But with just 13 minutes left The Owls' backline was finally breached when Phillips beat both Beevers and Spurr to a Robinson's left wing cross to head the ball low into the corner of the net. Moments later the goal scorer was stretchered off the field with an injury and with Baggies boss Tony Mowbray having already used his three substitutions Albion were forced to play the last period of the game with ten men.

Laws had three forwards on the field and with nothing to lose Wednesday pressed for an equaliser. Three minutes of injury time were shown by the fourth official but an injury time injury to Robinson delayed matters longer. But with the result seemingly in the bag Watson latched on to a loose ball on the edge of the box to fire in his first goal for the club.

Not only did Albion believe the game should have been over by that stage they also felt hard done by that Tudgay's challenge in the box to create the shooting chance for Watson should have been called as a foul.

They may have had a case but it was the kind of luck that has deserted Wednesday all season and just rewards for a side that has worked so hard to turn their season around in recent weeks. Mowbray is likely to face an FA charge after he charged on to the field to confront Referee Nigel Miller. Laws no doubt slipped down the tunnel with a sly smile on his face, celebrating his side's tenth point from their last fifteen on offer.

Laws verdict:

"We've had a shade of luck, hand on heart. We've not had much this season and I think we've had more luck in this game than in any other."

"Not many teams are going to come here and get anything, I think they're a sensational side - fantastic to watch. They're the best in the division."
