Tudgay strike enough to beat Tigers

The Owls Reserve side maintained their 100% winning start to the season with a 2-1 win against Hull City in their first home fixture of the campaign. With European qualifiers bringing the domestic season to a halt it was an opportunity for Wednesday to give some of their senior players a run out. Liam McMenamin at right back was the only player to have not tasted first team football to date.

It was also a chance for Wednesday's goal shy forwards to gain some confidence. They did that within the first five minutes as Francis Jeffers finished off with the simplest of tap ins following good work on the right from Jermaine Johnson.

The Tigers levelled matters ten minutes later when Stuart Elliott headed in at the back post, the score remained 1-1 until the break.

Wednesday's front pairing changed for the second half with Marcus Tudgay having already replaced Deon Burton, and Akpo Sodje on for goal scorer Jeffers.

The game's winning strike came with a little over quarter of an hour left on the clock as Tudgay finished neatly from close range. It was the former Derby man's first strike in all grades of football this season after having scored three times during pre-season.

McAuley verdict:

"It was a really good performance from our lads. But credit too must go to Hull City because they had a team of young professionals out there and I thought they made a really good fist of it."

"The only real downside was the concern over Sodje's groin and Burton took a whack in the first half as well. I don't think there's a major doubt over those two players, though, and it was our intention to only play them for 45 minutes anyway."

"It was a really good exercise for those lads, who turned in good performances on the night. Also, Jermaine Johnson, of course, missed the last game through suspension so he's now got a good 90 minutes under the belt."
