Wednesday Wingers on form at Saltergate

The Owls ensured their unbeaten run during the pre-season campaign continued with a comfortable 2-0 win at local rivals Chesterfield thanks to continued form in front of goal from two of their wingers in Wade Small and Chris Brunt.

While last week's tour of Holland was a success results wise, with a win and two draws, Wednesday saw two players sent off in consecutive games and now there are genuine fears that Brunt and striker Deon Burton could be suspended for the start of the season.

The Spireites were on the back foot early on as the Owls pegged back their League One opposition. Jermaine Johnson looked lively early on and youngster Liam McMenamin's winding run and shot tested Michael Jordan in the Chesterfield goal.

The pressure was converted into a one goal lead midway through the half after Chris Brunt converted a 25th minute penalty following a trip by Jordan on Leon Clarke in the box. It was Brunt's third pre-season goal and his second from the spot.

Despite Wednesday's persistence in attack the scoreline remained 1-0 at the break.

The home side rang in the changes at the break but Brian Laws decided to give his starting XI a run for just over an hour with Deon Burton, Wade Small and Burton O'Brien coming on in the 63rd minute. Burton had the chance to make an immediate impact but after racing through on goal the Owls forward blasted over the bar.

Small, not for the first time in recent weeks, impressed his manager with a brilliantly struck effort five minutes from the end. The former MK Dons winger fired one past Jordan from 25 yards out to seal a deserved win for the Owls, who now face trips to Port Vale and Oldham in the next week.
