O'Brien completes Owls comeback at Plymouth...again!

It was a case of a little bit of history repeating for Wednesday on Saturday as they came from a goal behind to win 2-1 at Home Park, just like in the fixture last season. On that day in August 2006 The Owls, managed then by Paul Sturrock, went behind after conceding a penalty but won the game thanks to goals from Sean McAllister and a winner from Burton O'Brien.

It was very much a similar story this time around after Wednesday had conceded a penalty two minutes after the break. Frank Simek brought down Peter Halmosi and Sylvain Ebanks-Blake smashed the ball past Grant for 1-0.

That opening goal came after an entertaining but goal less first half that saw Plymouth come the closest to finding the back of the net. Barry Hayles' 23rd minute header beat Grant but not the crossbar, and Wednesday were saved. Wednesday's best chance had come from last week's hero Richard Hinds whose close range header from a Steve Watson corner went wide of the post.

The Owls showed great character to bounce back almost straight away with an equaliser against an Argyle outfit that was undefeated in their last eight games. Jermaine Johnson nodded the ball down for Akpo Sodje who thrashed the ball into the far top hand corner from an almost impossible angle. It was Sodje's first goal for Wednesday since signing from Port Vale at the end of August.

To the amazement of the travelling supporters Wednesay took the lead just four minutes after drawing level. Defender Michael Johnson made a vital block in his own area from an Argyle corner and from that Sodje fed O'Brien, via a clever dummy from Jermaine Johnson, and the Scottish midfielder showed great composure to close in on the keeper and slot the ball home.

Sodje could've put the game beyond Ian Holloway's side soon after when he found himself in space in the penalty area but could only head the ball straight to Luke McCormick. Plymouth rallied for a point late on but The Owls held firm, largely thanks to a huge defensive effort from Michael Johnson who continues to impress during his loan spell from Derby.

There was jubilation as the final whistle blew with Wednesday now moving further away from the relegation zone after this their fifth win in eight games. It was just the confidence booster needed for Brian Laws' side to take to The Hawthorns in midweek against a West Brom side that beat league leaders Watford 3-0 on the weekend.

Laws verdict:

"It was not a classic. It wasn't the football that we want to play but it is a solid performance away from home. We seem to be picking up most of our points away from home at the moment and we have shown real grit and determination."

"We had an embarrassing start to the season but we are now starting to pick up. That will give us another little edge to our game and a little bit more belief. It's the perfect boost before we go to West Brom on Tuesday."

"It could not have been a worse start to the second half but the response was important and we showed a lot of steel and determination. At times it was a bit scrappy, but it's three points and we are delighted with that."
