| Megson piles on the misery for Laws
Gary Megson recorded his first win as Leicester manager at the expense of his old club after condeming Wednesday to their eight league defeat in ten games. The chorus of boos following the 2-0 loss was a reminder, as if he needed one, that Brian Laws continues to be under huge pressure.
The Owls appeared to have turned the corner with back to back wins over Hull and Norwich. But a series of injuries to first team players hampered their hopes of picking up anything at league leaders Watford, although a 2-1 defeat was nothing to be ashamed of, while this result means Wednesday's next few games could determine Laws' future as manager.
Scoring goals has been the consistent problem for The Owls this season. They've managed only seven from ten league outings, and three from the last seven. But conceding goals early in games means Wednesday are constantly chasing games and putting themselves under pressure.
They were two-nil down inside quarter of an hour and the game was effectively over. It took Wednesday 77 minutes to force Leicester keeper Marton Fulop into a save. When you're playing at home and struggling to win games stats like that are just not acceptable.
Both Foxes' goals came from corners and both from the inswinging left boot of Alan Sheehan. The first, after seven minutes, was awkwardly headed in by skipper Sean McAuley who had escaped the loose marking of Lee Bullen.
The killer second goal came just six minutes later. Another Sheehan delivery caused mayhem in the Wednesday box and Owls striker Akpo Sodje was unlucky to watch the ball rebound off him and into the net.
Another injury to the on loan Michael Johnson forced Laws into a defensive switch before the break, bringing on the inexperienced Mark Beevers to make only his third appearance in the first team.
Deon Burton flashed a half volley agonisingly wide of the post in the second half, after a neat head down from Sodje, but it was a rare piece of attacking play for Wednesday. Burton O'Brien and Francis Jeffers were sent on for the final 17 minutes of the match and it was O'Brien that recorded Wednesday's first shot on goal.
By that stage Megon's side looked all but home and hosed to record three points.

Laws verdict:
"Everybody will look at every club that is not doing well and will put the manager under pressure."
"What we will do is work as hard as we've ever done before to put that right - the only time it changes is when the chairman does the changing."
"I was good enough last year and I'll be good enough this year." |
