Rams earn replay with two goal comeback

Wednesday had to settle for a draw and a home replay with Premier League side Derby County, managed by former Owls bos Paul Jewel, after throwing away a two goal advantage in their FA Cup Third Round tie at Pride Park.

The Owls had a goalkeeping error to thank for their opening goal after just nine minutes when Rams keeper Robert Price spilled a Mark Beevers effort into the net. The young centre-back was delighted to claim his first goal for the senior side but his drilled left foot effort from the edge of the box should have been dealt with by Price. That howler lead to the 5,000 strong away support chanting "that's why you're going down".

Derby's Craig Fagan missed an open goal on 15 minutes and eight minutes later it got worse for the Premier League's basement side when defender Darren Moore's poor defensive header allowed Marcus Tudgay, a signing from Derby two year ago, to slot home for 2-0. It came as a huge relief for the Wednesday forward whose previous goal came at the end of October.

With a two goal lead and the opposition in disarray it was almost impossible to believe that Derby would go into the break level. But it happened after some defensive howlers of Wednesday's own. The home side's comeback came after Jewell brought Michael Johnson, who has just spent three months on loan at Hillsborough and his still hoping to seal a permanent deal, on as a sub to a chorus of jeers from the Derby crowd.

Scotland international Kenny Miller gave Derby a lifeline in the 39th minute with a sharp turn and shot that had the better of Lee Grant, but the equaliser on the stroke of half-time had Owls boss Brian Laws pulling his hair out. Wednesday's defence stood and watched a bouncing ball and their failure to clear the ball first time was punished by 19 year old Giles Barnes who lashed the ball home from some 15 yards out.

The second half brought no more goals but still plenty of goal mouth action. The best effort for the Rams fell to Gary Teale but his close range volley was brilliantly saved by Grant. At the other end another former Derby player in Deon Burton had a late strike disallowed and Tudgay's header was cleared from the line.

A replay at Hillsborough will decide who will taken on Preston North End in the next round.
