Wolves held by spirited Owls

Battling Sheffield Wednesday held Wolves at home in an entertaining 2-2 draw in the Midlands. Caretaker manager Sean McAuley kept with the same eleven that he fielded in the victory over QPR the previous weekend with youngster Tommy Spurr continuing to partner Madjid Bougherra at the back in absense of Graham Coughlan.

After an early onslaught by the home side Wednesday played their way back into the game with Marcus Tudgay keeping Wolves keeper Matt Murray busy and Deon Burton fluffed a fantastic goal scoring opportunity. The Owls went behind on the half hour mark as Leon Clarke appeared to bundle over Spurr from a Jamie Clapham cross, no call was made by referee Lewis and Clarke dispatched the ball past Brad Jones for 1-0.

The lead was short lived though as Wade Small's spectacular solo effort six minutes later brought the scores level. The pacey winger cut inside from the right before leaving a trail of defender in his wake before slotting classily past Murray for his first goal in Wednesday colours.

Wolves pressed to regain the lead before the break but it was Wednesday who entered the second period the stronger, and their efforts were rewarded with a 53rd minute goal by Chris Brunt that gave them the lead. Tudgay's initial effort was blocked, leaving Brunt an empty net to smash the ball into.

A defensive hiccup allowed Leon Clarke his second of the game to bring things level in the 73rd minute. A slip by John Hills gifted possession to Clarke who beat Jones from close range to make it 2-2.

Undoubtedly McAuley will have been happy to take a point off Wolves away from home, and ensuring he has now steered the Owls to a two match unbeaten run whilst temporarily in charge.

McAuley verdict:

"We deserved a point and the players showed spirit. We played really well and the mentality is good."

"Whether this is my last game in charge I don't know. We are training on Sunday and we will keep preparing properly."

"If someone else comes in I will help and support him but I'm in a position where I can enjoy the job and try to take some pressure off the players."
