Rowlands grabs Rangers a point

The Owls had to settle for a point at strugglers QPR after a Martin Rowlands spot kick 18 minutes from time cancelled out Chris Brunt's strike that has given Wednesday the lead.

Rangers started brightly in a game they desperately needed to win. Iain Turner, on loan from Everton, continued his good run of form in helping Wednesday end the bad run that saw the Owls go winless in the opening nine games of 2007. The shot stopper from Merseyside saved well from Dextor Blackstock and Inigo Idiakez, while Lee Cooke also hit the bar for John Gregory's side.

Wednesday started the second half strongly and scored the game's opener through Chris Brunt's 11th goal of the season. Brunt got ahead of his man and latched onto a Steve MacLean headed flick on to stab the ball into the top corner after 56 minutes. The Owls winger has been in top form of late and this performance lead to speculation in the media that a number of top clubs will be after him in the summer.

The penalty decision seemed a bit soft for Wednesday's liking. Paul Furlong's tamely lobbed ball into the box cause problems for Richard Wood and Tommy Spurr, who allowed Rangers striker Marc Nygaard get inbetween them. Wood appeared to extend his arm although there was clearly minimal contact.

Referee Woolmer pointed to the spot and Rowlands drilled the ball low under the right palm of Turner to earn a precious point for the home side.

Laws verdict:

"Chris Brunt will attract attention. If you look at his goals this season, they would not look out of place in the Premiership.

"I believe he will get to the Premiership. He is young, talented and he is a shining light at Sheffield Wednesday.

"But he is not going anywhere. He is under contract, and we need players like him at the club."
