Owls hang on as Bully see's red

The Owls shared the opening day spoils after they held out for a scoreless draw at Preston despite playing the final third game of the game with only ten men. Veteran utility player Lee Bullen was shown a straight red card for a reckless challenge in the 57th minute, although television replays provided enough evidence to suggest he may have a case in appealing against the decision.

Up until that point Wednesday had created plenty of chances and had had a Chris Brunt goal disallowed just before half-time, the Owls winger caught knocking the ball with his hand before smartly lobbing the keeper from outside the edge of the box. Chances also fell to midfielder Glenn Whelan, transfer listed weeks ago by Sturrock but now in the side due to injuries, but the Irishman couldn't find the back of the net.

Preston pressed forward for a winner late in the second half and had a goal ruled out themselves after a foul on Brad Jones in the box. Sturrock gave Owls debuts to three players in goalkeeper Jones, who only joined the club yesterday after signing on a three month loan deal with Middlesbrough, Madjid Bougherra and former MK Dons winger Wade Smal made a ten minute showing at the end.

Sturrock verdict:

"We've got to be pleased. This is a difficult place to come but our work rate and attitude merited taking something out of the game. We bit and scratched and I'm very proud of the players."

"The crowd were absolutely magnificent, as they always are away."
