Jet-lagged Owls left staggered

Wednesday were left shocked and embarassed after losing 4-0 to League Two side Mansfield Town. A strong Owls outfit was outclassed as the home side ran away with it with three strikes in the final 12 minutes. Paul Sturrock later apologised to the fans, admitting that going ahead with the fixture having only arrived back in the country from the USA just two days before was a huge mistake.

Mansfield's first game midway through the first half when Deon Burton bundled over former Owls winger Matty Hamshaw. Another familiar face in Ritchie Barker, a former trainee, converted the spot-kick. Substitute Stephen Dawson grabbed the second in the 78th minute after breaking clear of the Owls backline. Just six minutes later the result was done and dusted when Barker grabbed his second, heading in from a Hamshaw corner. With just two minutes left on the clock the Owls were left shell shocked when Town grabbed a fourth. This time Jonathan D'Laryea punished Wednesday for some poor defensive work with a close range effort.

Over 1,600 of the 3,665 crowd at Field Mill were travelling Wednesday fans who were left wondering what on earth they had just seen. It was Wednesday's first pre-season game on English soil this summer.
