Owls nick controversial draw

Plymouth Argyle fans will have ever right to feel a little hard done by after a controversial Steve MacLean goal in the 20th minute helped the Owls to a 1-1 draw at home to Argyle.

Deon Burton appeared to blatantly, but accidentally, slide into Argyle keeper Luke McCormick who was claiming a high ball into the box from Chris Brunt. McCormick was bundled to the ground and spilt the ball, but while the visiting defenders stopped, presuming referee Lewis would award the free-kick, Steve MacLean did what every good pro should do and played to the whistle. To his amazement the goal was given and the Scot was celebrating his 10th goal of the season.

Argyle got their just rewards, in what was a forgettable midweek encounter, thanks to a 56th minute equaliser from Dan Gosling. The Argyle man lobbed a half volley over on loan keeper Iain Turner after the Owls had allowed a long throw-in to bounce inside the box.

The result extended Wednesday's unbeaten run to three matches and signals an return to some decent match form at last for Brian Laws' men.

Laws verdict:

"It was a case of after the lord mayor's show, we had a lot of tired legs out there.

"Deon Burton had been laid low with sickness and diarrhoea, but wanted to play, which is of great credit to him.

"I've not seen a replay of our goal but it was bizarre, it will be interesting to hear what the referee has to say."
