Foxes hit for four

The Owls continued their climb up the Championship ladder as they hit a depleted Leicester side for four at The Walkers Stadium. The Foxes spent most of the second half with just ten men on the park after a second bookable offence for home skipper Paddy McCarthy. The Owls were already ahead 1-0 at that stage, thanks to a first half penalty by Chris Brunt, but Wednesday let rip with long range screamers from Glenn Whelan, Marcus Tudgay and a second for Brunt.

Stephen Hughes had temporarily given the home side hope of a result with a goal in the 58th minute, but there was no stopping Brian Laws' side who have now lost just once in nine outings.

McCarthy's first booking came just before the break for verbally abusing the referee after awarding a 44th minute penalty to the Owls for a high challenge on Wayne Andrews. Brunt gave Wednesday a half-time lead and just five minutes into the second period the Leicester defender saw red for a clumsy challenge on Whelan. But the real talking point for Owls fans were the three superb second half strikes and the three points that have now helped Wednesday into 13th place in the league ladder.

The last time the Owls hit four in a league game was on a certain sunny Sunday afternoon in Cardiff.

Laws verdict:

"Funnily enough we had a great shooting session in training on Thursday but I certainly wasn't expecting anything like this."

"Penalty aside, they were three of the best goals I've seen in a long time."

"You are usually lucky to see one of those but we've scored three and that's amazing. We may have been comfortable but we still had to work hard for it."
