Table toppers held at Hillsborough

Wednesday bounced back well from last weekend's temporary halt in the return to good form for the Owls as they held first placed Cardiff City to a 0-0 stalemate at Hillsborough.

Defeat at Coventry last Saturday spelt the end of a short burst of success for the Owls who had picked up 13 points from the previous 15 on offer. This, however, was a good result for Brian Laws in his first showing on home turf since being announced as Paul Sturrock's replacement.

Veteran keeper Mark Crossley, on loan from Fulham, was the star of the show with a series of impressive stops including efforts from Michael Chopra and Paul Parry. Wayne Andrews, another loan player from Coventry City, impressed on his Owls debut but ran out of steam in the 73rd minute and was replaced by Glenn Whelan. But it was Crossley's performance that caught the eye and brought post match praise from Bluebirds boss Dave Jones.

Laws verdict:

"We've got a new lease of life and a never-say-die attitude. The team ethic has been fantastic."

"It wasn't fluent but the old Sheffield Wednesday would have crumbled against the league leaders and lost."

"We restricted them to half-chances and maybe with a bit of luck we might have got a goal ourselves."
