Brunt beauty seals derby delight

Wednesday fans have seen a number of injury time goals in recent weeks but for once it was their side sealing a winner at the death as Chris Brunt fired in a beauty to steal a win over Yorkshire neighbours Barnsley. If you're a Tykes fan you might not bother with the short journey to Hillsborough next time around - this was Wednesday's eighth consecutive win against Barnsley on this turf.

Glenn Whelan gave the Owls an early advantage with a superbly struck free-kick in the fifth minute, after Brunt acted as the decoy. Things got better for Wednesday midway through the half when former Owl and Barnsley skipper Paul Heckingbottom was told to have an early shower after collecting two yellow cards in the space of five minutes. His first was for handball, the second for a late challenge on Wade Small.

The Owls failed to take the game by the scruff of the neck and it looked like another one of those afternoons when the ten-men visitors pulled level in the 56th minute. Marc Richards found himself clean through on goal but Brad Jones' save fell only to the feet of Marc Richards who smashed the ball home.

But Wednesday had the last laugh in this South Yorkshire derby as Brunt slammed home from distance after a Frank Simek delivery was only half cleared.

Sturrock verdict:

"We'll take a dirty win and the important thing now is to build on this. Barnsley are a good side who play open football and we could have got kicked in the teeth again. "

"Chris Brunt can be a match-winner and so exasperating in the same game - and that's why he stays on sometimes."
