Owls sweep aside terrible Tykes

The Owls ended 2006 in top fashion beating Barnsley 3-0 in a one sided Yorkshire derby match. It also completed a successful December month for Wednesday and manager Brian Laws who recorded 13 points from a possible 18.

Wednesday took the upper hand early on and never looked like losing this one after Wayne Andrews' 12th minute goal, his first for the club. Steve MacLean's superb pass put Andrews through on goal and the Coventry City loan man drilled a low right foot shot past Nicky Colgan. The Owls took their foot off the gas momentarily during the first half and the Tykes came close when Grant McCann slammed a free-kick against the bar.

Laws' side held their lead into the break and quarter of an hour into the second period grabbed a decisive second goal. This time MacLean found Tudgay who in turn sent the ball across the face of goal for Brunt to apply a simple finish at the back post. It was the winger's 8th of the season in this his 100th first team start for Wednesday.

Barnsley looked a beaten side after Brunt's strike and a third soon followed to complete a truly awful afternoon for them. MacLean, who had played a hand in the first two, got one for himself after a defensive error by Antony Kay allowed the Scot through on goal.

A comfortable win for Wednesday who haven't lost to Barnsley in their last six meetings.

Laws verdict:
