Match Report

Saints treble beats worried Wednesday

Southampton spanked Wednesday 3-0 at the St Marys Stadium yesterday to end their own personal run of bad form, and condemn the Owls to a third successive league defeat. Wednesday, forced to name three untested Academy youngsters in their match day squad through injuries to senior players, never looked like leaving the south coast with anything and defended poorly.

The only joy for Owls fans is that two of the bottom three clubs lost as well as Hull and Leicester, who sit just above them in the table.

There was a first appearance of the season for Patrick Collins who replaced the injured Peter Gilbert at left-back. Ritchie Partridge also won a place back on the flanks with Yoann Folly and Leon Best both ineligible to play. More to follow...

Half-time: Southampton 1-0 Owls

Paul Sturrock post match comments:
"Collectively, we didn't defend well. "Their two strikers were the two best players on the pitch and we were second best in most departments. I'm not going to make excuses. We have got a lot of injuries, and it would be nice to get a settled side back again."

George Burley (Southampton manager) post match comments:
"It was a great team performance from start to finish. "We could have won by more, and I was pleased that we took the opportunities we created. At Newcastle last week in the FA Cup, for example, we were on top but didn't take our opportunities."
