Match Report

Owls dumped out of Cup

This report from the official site:

The Owls reserves exited the Pontin's Holiday's League Cup at the quarter-final stage after Hull City ran out 3-0 victors at Hillsborough. A double from Tom Matthews and a Craig Fagan strike ensured that there will be no repeat of Wednesday's final appearances in the competition over the past two seasons, which saw them lift the trophy in 2004.

A young Owls side were unable to really threaten their visitors after falling two goals behind just over a third of the way into the game and it was City who booked progression to the semi-finals. Owls keeper Ben Kirby made a smart early block to deny Nathan Hotte and Wednesday had a let-off when Fagan crashed a shot against the underside of the crossbar after five minutes. However the Tigers got their noses in front on 14 minutes as Matthews stooped to head home Fagan's left-wing centre.

Kirby stood up well to thwart Hotte a second time shortly afterwards and Sean McAllister's timely challenge denied the City striker a clean shot at shot at goal. However Hull doubled their advantage just past the half-hour point when Fagan drove a low shot into Kirby's bottom right-hand corner.

Matthews and Fagan both fired shots off target after the break while McAllister ballooned his effort over the top after Matt Duke blocked his initial effort. Fagan bent a free-kick past the post from 25 yards and Russell Fry wasn't too far away from a similar distance. Kirby then made another fine stop to deny William Atkinson, who also headed against the post, before Matthews poked his second past Kirby in the final minute.

Half-time: Owls 0-2 Hull
