Match Report

Lucas the hero for Wednesday

Owls keeper David Lucas was the hero of the day as he helped Wednesday defeat fellow Championship side Wolves on penalties to reach the Discovery Cup Final in Dundee. Lucas made a string of fine first half saves to keep Glenn Hoddle's men at bay against a near full strength Owls side that included trialists Frankie Simek and Liverpool winger Ritchie Partridge.

Half-time: Wolves 0-0 Owls

The Owls were lucky to go in level at the break but the second half was a much quieter affair. The game remained goalless into extra time and so penalties were required to determine a winner. The shootout's only failure came from Wolves' sub Kevin Cooper who missed the first of the ten spot-kicks.

With most of Wednesday's attacking players already having been substituted it was down to the defenders to win the shoot-out. Lee Bullen, John Hills, Burton O'Brien, Graham Coughlan all tucked away their penalties before goalkeeper David Lucas stepped up to secure the win. The Owls will play either Dundee or Dundee United in tomorrow's final.

AnzOwls' verdict: Nice to put one over a Championship side, but we were probably luck to take it to penalties.
