Match Report

Stalemate at Field Mill

Wednesday played out a 0-0 draw with League Two side Mansfield Town at Field Mil as Wednesday failed to score for the third time in four pre-season outings.. About the most exciting talking point of the day was the ticket farce that left fans confused as to whether or not the game was an all-ticket affair. It seemed the authorities weren't even sure themselves right up until the whistle.

Paul Sturrock started with a strong XI that may resemble a side that will start against Premier League side Manchester City this Saturday. Manchester United winger Chris Eagles got his first run in a Wednesday shirt, after having joined the Owls on a five month loan deal from the Red Devils.

Former Owl Carlton Palmer, now in charge of Mansfield, started the game in midfield as did Hillsborough legend Kevin Pressman and former Owls trainee Ritchie Barker.

Mansfield threatened the Wednesday goal early on, whilst Chris Eagles had an effort flash past the post. The closest the game came to a goal was from Chris Brunt's 25 yard free-kick, which clipped the crossbar and went over.

Half-time: Mansfield 0-0 Owls

Sturrock changed his entire 11 for the second period in a slightly weaker looking Wednesday team that had youngsters Tommy Spurr, Danny Reet and Richard Evans all given 45 minutes on the park. One pleasing thing to see was the big reception given to Kevin Pressman as he took his place in the Mansfield goal infront of the travelling Owls fans. Chants of "England's Number One" echoed around Field Mill.

Pressman, who made over 475 appearances for Wednesday, kept the Owls at bay throughout the second half as chances were few and far between. Adam Proudlock's long range effort seven minutes from time didn't threaten Pressman's goal as the home side went on to force a credible draw.

AnzOwls' verdict: One goal in our last four games - do we have a scoring crisis on our hands?
